When choosing a working shawl, be sure to check the measurements - most eBay buys are not the full traditional size. However they're usually big enough to work with and to wear as a top - and big enough for beginners.   While they're not the same quality as a Spanish shawl, they are cheaper, so you don't have to be so worried about damaging them.

I own many large shawls, but only one authentic Spanish shawl, embroidered in Seville. My other shawls are lovely, but my Seville shawl stands out - the silk is heavier, the embroidery has a subtle sheen and the fringe is weightier.  However, so was the price!   I would never risk wearing my precious Spanish shawl as a top, or using it in class, for fear of damage - but it gets so many compliments when I do use it, and it's one of my most treasured possessions.  If you can afford a real Andalusian silk shawl like the one on the right, I say go for it!
